Fireworks Displays on Campus

The following procedures must be followed in order to allow public fireworks displays at California State University, Fullerton. Failure to follow these procedures will result in the denial of the permit!

Notify These Departments:

  • 20 days prior: Environmental Health and Instructional Safety
    (714) 278-7233
  • 10 days prior: State Fire Marhsal's Office
    (916) 445-8373

Guidelines:

  • All pyrotechnic (fireworks) events at any CSUF function may only be conducted by companies holding a valid license by the State Fire Marshal regardless if the event is University sponsored or not.
  • EH&IS will grant campus approval for the event. The organization planning a display must contact Environmental Health & Instructional Safety a minimum of 20 working days prior to the event. Information needed is the date, time, location, and the name of the fireworks company. Note: It is the responsibility of the licensed Public Display company (NOT the organization sponsoring the event) to contact The State Fire Marshal to arrange for a permit.
  • The State Fire Marshal will not issue any permits for fireworks on any University property unless the authorization from Environmental Health & Instructional Safety is received which indicates campus approval of the event.
  • EH&IS and the State Fire Marshal will provide a plan for crowd control during setup and display. EH&IS will be responsible for crowd control, area security and barricading of the fallout zone. Costs for this service may be charged back to the organization planning the event.
  • The pyrotechnics company obtaining the permit must provide proof of insurance, a valid license issued by the State Fire Marshal's Office, and the name and State Fire Marshal license number of the licensed pyrotechnic operator who will be in charge of the event.
  • Application for a display permit must be made in writing by the public display company to the State Fire Marshal's Office (PO Box 944246, Sacramento, CA 94244-2460 - FAX: (916) 445-8458). It must be received by the State Fire Marshal at least 10 working days prior to the proposed event.
  • The firing zone and the fallout zone for aerial shells are required to have a 70 ft radius for every inch fired. (Example: 3 inch shells will require a clear zone of 210 ft radius.)
  • The State Fire Marshal's Office will make a survey of the display sight to determine if the firing site is safe for people or property. They have the final authority to approve or deny the request.
  • The State Fire Marshal may require the organization planning the event to arrange and pay for Fullerton Fire Department to have an engine company on site during the firing. Contact Fullerton Fire Department, (714) 738-6500, for fee schedule.
