Driving on the Interior of Campus
An increased number of vehicles and small electric/gas carts
on campus, both State and private, have created an increased
risk to pedestrians and has damaged walkways and turf areas.
Campus organizations responsible for these drivers have met
to discuss ways to control this problem and have developed
the following guidelines. Because there are many campus organizations
responsible for both off campus and on campus drivers, each
group will be addressed separately following the general guidelines.
General Guidelines
- The interior of the campus is defined as the area bounded
and enclosed by Gym Drive and West, East and South Campus
Drives; includes Visual Arts Complex; excluding parking
lots, loading docks and loading dock access roads.
- The interior of the campus will be closed to State vehicles
and carts between 8:30 AM and 3:00 PM, Monday through Friday.
State vehicles and carts are allowed on the interior of
the campus for emergency response only. Supervisors will
be responsible for enforcing driving regulations.
- Speed limit for vehicles and carts may not exceed 5 mph.
- Vehicles are restricted from being driven on Athletic
fields at all times, except when authorized by the Sports
Complex Director or the designee.
- Private and vendor vehicles are restricted at all times.
Vehicles requiring access to the interior quad must obtain
a permit from University Police and obtain escorts as noted
below.
- Student groups conducting events in the campus interior
must first obtain approval from the Office of Student Life.
- All private and vendor vehicles requiring access must
be escorted by either University Police or an individual
or group designated by University Police if driving on the
interior between 8:30 AM - 3:00 PM.
- Disciplinary action may be imposed on anyone violating
the regulations.
- Private and vendor vehicles may be subject to California
Vehicle Code citations.
- Vehicles may not be driven across campus turf/lawns or
over campus curbs except at driveways, or in such a way
as to damage the root systems of adjacent trees.
Physical Plant
- Landscape Services equipment such as riding mowers, vacuums,
tree trimmers, etc. are exempt. Equipment delivery to campus
locations in the early morning hours is unrestricted. Pickup
of equipment must be at designated locations on the perimeter
of the interior campus. All other driving on campus by Landscape
Services must be task specific and only when necessary.
- Plant workers are exempt from these regulations when responding
to emergency repairs of campus equipment that cannot be
reached by roadways or loading docks.
- Trash pickup from campus trash receptacles must be accomplished
before 8:30 AM or after 3:00 PM.
- The interior campus must never be used as a shortcut route
from one end of the campus to another.
- Loading docks will be used for parking of service vehicles.
The only exception is north of Faculty Terrace North for
servicing of that location.
Shipping/Receiving, Property, Recycling, Instructional Media,
Reprographics, Campus Catering and Mail Services

breezeway ramp.
If at all possible, keep deliveries to the above two locations
before 8:30 am and after 3:00 PM.
All access to the campus loading docks and the above locations
must be from the exterior roads.
