Safety in Makeup
1. Policy
It is the policy of the Theatre and Dance Department at California
State University, Fullerton to provide an environment of safety
and well-being, to students, employees, and visitors in the
makeup classrooms and dressing rooms (PA-136/PA-138A), Laboratories
(PA-179).
2. Purpose
The purpose of these safety procedures is to make students
and each person using the make up facilities aware of potential
hazards when using hair sprays, dryers, curling irons, steam
rollers, as well as prosthetic related materials and equipment.
3. Scope and Application
The policy applies to instructors, staff, students assistants,
student crew heads, crew members, volunteers and guest during
the teaching of makeup courses, and the preparation and running
of a stage production in any of the makeup facilities.
4. Responsibilities
4.1 Department
The department provides the procedures and the safety equipment
needed for safe operation. It also assures such information
and equipment is distributed and its use implemented.
4.2 Instructor
Abel Zeballos, instructor, assures that safety procedures
are followed at all times in the dressing rooms and in the
makeup lab. Any faculty should assure that all safety procedures
are being followed.
4.3 Students/Volunteers
All students must adhere to all applicable safety procedures
at all times when working or in the makeup facilities. The
student should be certain to receive, read, and understand
the Department of Theatre and Dance General Safety Information
and the specific area safety procedures for all the makeup
facilities. The student's agreement to follow safe procedures
is a condition of permission to make use of the makeup facilities.
5. Emergencies
5.1 Nearest phone

5.2 Serious Injury Or Illness
*Call 9+9-1-1
*Notify your faculty or supervisor.
*Do what you can, stay calm.
5.3 Fire
*Call 9+911
*Notify your faculty or supervisor.
*On small fire-use fire extinguisher, close (not lock)doors.
*Evacuate building.
5.4 Earth Quake-Indoors
*Get in door way or under table or desk.
*Following shock, evaluate situation. In case of severe shock,
call campus police 9+9-1-1
*Turn off equipment, evacuate building, assist others.
5.5 University Emergency Procedures Sheets
Emergency information is available in all department laboratories
and offices , know the location of these sheets and acquaint
yourself with the information.
5.6 Fire Extinguishers
Locate fire extinguishers on wall right across dress rooms
between PA 135 and PA 135A or right across PA 190 (men's rest
room ): pull the pinpoint the nozzle at the base of the fire,
squeeze the handle.
6. Reporting of Injuries and Unsafe Conditions
6.1 Serious injuries should be handled as 5.2 above. Report immediately.
6.2 Report minor injuries to Abel Zeballos on the next business day.
Minor injuries are those which you have treated yourself
of have taken to the Health Center yourself
6.3 Unsafe conditions should be reported immediately to Abel
Zeballos.
Place HAZARD sign on equipment. Possible severe danger (such
as that of fire) should be reported to any Department faculty
or staff, or in their absence, to Campus Police at extension
2515.
FIRE EMERGENCY: CALL CAMPUS POLICE AT 9+911.
7. General Conduct and Regulation
7.1 Because equipment such as curling irons, hot rollers,
hair dryers, crimpers, etc. are used by the actor/student during production
and in the laboratory, it is important to have training and
a clear understanding on how to use them.
7.2 Use such tools only for their specific purposes and nothing
else.
7.3 Horseplay is forbidden.
7.4 When working on styling wigs and hair pieces in PA 179,
it may require the use of different kinds of hairsprays, you
should only use the types you have been trained to use.
7.5 It is recommended whenever possible, to go outside of
the Performing Arts Building by the Scene Shop and do most
of your hair spraying.
7.6 If you are required to use spray paint, then you must
go outside by the Scene Shop door and have the Shop supervisor
clear you to do so. You will be informed of the need to be
on personnel protection devices.
7.7 Do not work intoxicated, or when drowsy from prescription
drugs.
8. Training Policy
8.1 You must be trained by the instructor, staff, student
assistant crew heads or crew members.
8.2 You must be trained to use electrical appliances such
as curling irons, hot rollers, steamers, mixers, etc.
8.3 Training will occur at the beginning and during the semester.
8.4 Other persons may use the makeup facilities if they have
been authorized.
9. Personal Protective Devices
A smock is recommended to protect your clothing from makeup
materials. When using spray paint wear gloves, goggles, and
mask.
10. Electrical Safety
10.1 Turn off main switches in the dressing rooms which
are located on the wall by the entrance in each room when
classes or rehearsals are over.
10.2 Turn the makeup mirror lights off when they are not
in use.
10.3 Do not use extension cords in dressing rooms.
10.4 Do not use equipment or connectors that have worn or
broken insulation. Attach HAZARD sign and report immediately.
11. Hazardous Materials
11.1 You are entitled to be informed of possible hazards
arising from the presence and use of hazardous materials in
the Make-up laboratory. For this reason standardized Material
Safety Data Sheets (MSS) are available for your use. You will
be informed if any hazardous materials are in use and if protective
devices are needed. You cannot be penalized for questioning
the safety of any materials or procedures.
11.2 Ms's are available in the make-up lab and must be left
there. Additional reference copies are located in the Production
office.
11.3 Read instructions and warnings on spray paint cans.
11.4 Do not use anything that does not have a label on it.
11.5 Do not experiment with any material which you are not
familiar and have been trained to do so. You must always ask
your immediate supervisor if in doubt.
11.6 Prevent getting any sprays, makeup or related materials
on anyone's eyes.
11.7 Do not dispose of any spray paint cans or glue containers
without checking with the instructor or the student assistant
first.
11.8 All materials must be left in their original containers
complete with factory labels.
