Step 1: Perform pre-use inspection and check work area

Controls

  • Complete hands-on band saw training prior to use
  • Make sure work area is clean and well lit
  • Red tag any equipment which does not pass inspection
  • Check the condition of blade and guards, and replace those obstructed, or dull blades or guards.
  • Check the blade type, replace it if it is not for the material
  • Tighten blade if loose
  • Always Lockout/Tagout machine when changing/tightening blades

Step 2: Operating a stationary band saw

Hazards

  • Lacerations
  • Amputations
  • Flying sawdust

Controls

  • Don PPE, including work shoes with non-slip soles, a dust mask and safety glasses
  • Use clamp or vice to secure small of material
  • Keep guards in place, do not bypass
  • Keep loose clothing, hair and jewelry away from moving parts
  • Keep fingers and hands away from pinch points
  • Always allow the motor to come to full speed before cutting
  • Never start the equipment when the blade is in contact with a work piece
  • Ensure work piece is flat against work table, never attempt to cut work at elevated heights; this will cause the work piece to move down with the blade and can cause injury
  • Never cut more than one piece at a time
  • Blade will coast when it is turned off
  • Always Lockout/Tagout machine when changing blades or removing jammed pieces
